27A-Reading Reflection No.3

The Art of Social Media: Power Tips for Power Users, Guy Kawasaki

1. The general theme of this book was how to take your different social media platforms and utilize them to your advantage. It gives you a idea of the type of content you should be sharing on your pages and how you can draw in "fans" and make people want to read your content. It also goes over how you need to make the page attract the type of people in a industry you are interested in. You want to make sure the content will be relevant to them and that also you use your platforms in a professional manner. The tips and tricks Guy uses to help the reader really understand how to get the most out of social media are really enlightening and extremely helpful.

2. The book connected with what we are learning in ENT3003 because it all revolves around how to attract people to what you are doing or wanting to get out there. This class has talked a lot about professionalism and doing things that portray this image. The book does the same but gives you tips on how to do this digitally. Many of us have business ideas that will require social media in order to get the acknowledgment and advertising out there. This has to be done though 100% and you can not slack on it. Guy talks a lot about this and that if you want to succeed within the social media realm you have to put the effort in that you are hoping to get out of it. I was really able to connect this book to all aspects of this class because it just shows the more tips and advice you are able to learn and utilize in your daily life, the more successful you are going to be in any venture you pursue.

3. If I were to make a exercise for the class for the class based on this book it would be a creative one. I would want each student to create two social media pages. They would be able to choose from two social media platforms. I would then want each student to take 1 day to make this page as professional as possible. That means they would not be able to have pictures from parties, or with their animals, these two pages would have to be strictly professional. Then we would go around the class and each student would explain why they chose certain features to put on their pages and why they decided to leave others out. By the end of the exercise each student will have a idea of how to take social media and use it to their advantage in their professional lives.

4. I believe that the biggest surprise for me when reading this book was how detailed it was when explaining social media. I expected it to give advice that would be helpful but never thought Guy would go into the type of detail he did. I feel like his tips on how to use social media to better your whole networking experience were extremely relatable and things I could begin to put to use right away. I guess my aha moment was when I realized how easy it is to really change your social media to better your circumstances and make you stand out. It is not some drawn out process that takes forever. If you follow the advice that is given through the book you can go to social media and begin to make it fit a more professional environment. By the time I was done reading this book I felt much more confident in how my social media was going to attract the type of people I want in my network. A must read for anyone that wants to start taking advantage of social media.

  1. Garrett,
I like your idea of having your class create a professional social media platform. This would help students realize that having a professional account is very beneficial. These platforms help provide their future employer with confidence in hiring them and much more. It will also help students to know how to create a professional account. They will know what to say and what to put on their account.
